Crown Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil is the first Indian royal who has ever come out as gay. It took him 30 years of internal struggle before he dedicated his life to gay rights activism. This is his story.
H.R.H Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of Rajpipla discusses his very public coming out, the latest in Indian politics and his motivation for building a queer sanctuary in conversation with Travel Weekly’s Editor-in-Chief, Arnie Weissmann.

H.R.H. has been one of India’s main faces for LGBTQ+ activism since he came out, was stripped of his Maharaja and disowned by his Royal family. Since then, he has opened up his palace as an LGBTQ+ refuge, started the Lakshya Trust – a charity dedicated to HIV/AIDS education and prevention – and has been a strong advocate in the decriminalisation of homosexuality in India.
